Outdoor News MN:
A MN DNR study on fawn survival in the farm regions of Minnesota. GPS collars. 82 were collared, 44 died. 34 were killed by coyotes… 4 were health related, 3 killed by vehicle, 3 by hunters.
I knew it was a problem, but that is worse than I thought…Insane numbers ! Not good !

Makes you wonder if the process of collaring them makes them more prone to a coyote attack. That just seems really high. Dang.

I’m going to be able to hunt them from my back deck when I finally get the new house built.
I have my new suppressed .223 and I’m going to lay waste to them. If I could afford a thermal scope I’d do that too! I plan to have a tripod out there with a clamp on top so I can just amble out and plop my gun in it for targets of opportunity.

Sure I'd like to see more of the fawns killed by humans than by coyotes, but the overall numbers don't look insane at all, they look almost perfectly ok imo.
Not that there is anything wrong with shooting coyotes, or turkeys.

Not a coyote, but this guy and his buddy need to go also. I had problems with the neighbors dogs when I had my 40. There were 3 that were constantly chasing deer and killing fawns. I talked to them several times and they always claimed they had no dogs. I had trail cam pics of them and one of the kids was playing with one in the yard while I was there but the old man still denied he had no dogs. After several failed attempts to resolve the issue I had no other option. Xylitol mixed with some meat scraps did the trick. You can get it from amazon.

Not good ! If anyone wants to post the article feel free. I just read the article and noticed the differences in fawn survival and death from coyotes between 2021 and 2022. Two thoughts came to mind. 1. If that area had a drought in 2022, was other feed not available for the coyotes? Was it a burning year for the WMA’s with a lack of cover? I guess they are looking at cover as part of the study. 2. Were excessive numbers of mature does killed in the fall of 2021 with only younger moms for fawns born in 2022? We usually have good fawn survival in my area as compared to what I see far up north. This year may be different after the rough winter and a significant number of mature does have been harvested.
