That's what I use. Put cat food with a squirt of fish oil on bottom of trap with a marshmallow on top. You can put a few mini marshmallows in bottom also. If you have a racoon trail put the dogproof trap right in trail. When anchoring trap keep it far enough from tree or branches as the coon will use it to pull out.

Thats the bomb from people I know that use them. I have one that I need to put out at home....... havent tried it yet. I have 2 live traps, and I cannot believe how many times the food is gone and nothing in the traps..... Whats double puzzling is that sometimes its tripped and the food is gone. I put a camera on one, so anxious to see WTF is going on. But the dog proof is next. Sick of feeders empty and sick of bringing them all in the house so they dont get emptied. Mice or voles are stealing your bait in live traps. They can and will steal bait out of dog proofs too. That is why I put marshmallows on top of dogproof , ithelped slow the mice from stealing bait. An old golf ball works too.

Mice can get in the live traps and clean out the food, especially if the coon bait is something they like to eat. I usually just use random kitchen scraps mixed with a little dog food when I set live bait traps for coons.

Well, I typed my response without reading the rest of the posts. It looks like Tom already mentioned the mouse problem!

What puzzles me is the trap is tripped as well.... A mouse cant trip it It depends on what type of cage trap you have. Some of them have the mechanism/rod that attaches to pan and door on outside of cage. A curious racoon will investigate and circle trap trying to get to bait. In doing this the coon may bump the rod causing the trap door to close.

Understood but the bait inside is also gone. I suppose a small critter eats it and later a coon trips the arm externally. Plausible.

Got a bird in WV today. Second of the season. Dad gave him some seductive talk while he was on roost. He flew down hill and across a small creek and landed within range. But my poor set up kept him out of sight. He then gobbled like a fool without taking a step. Second gobbler pitched down beside him. Then a hen started talking where they had just come from. Eventually he started down a trail towards dad and I pulled the trigger about a second after seeing a beard. Fun hunt. He had some hooks.

Still season open this week but I’m now finished. Daughter got a bird on Sunday. She had only 2 days to hunt and it rained the first. Was happy to close the deal on day 2. I had backed off to try to pull and talkative hen to her. It worked and she hung around a long time. I was trapped about 50 yards away. Gobble fired off close by and she got it done without me sitting by her side. That was a first.

my 10 year old son shot a nice Tom last night. It snuck in behind us quietly and wouldn’t come in, so we turned around, leaned against a tree and he made a great shot. It was a longer shot than I thought - 40 yards. That’s stretching it with a 20 gauge, but he hit him right in the head. turkey nuggets for supper tonight.
