Hey folks. Been awhile. Everything and everyone good here?
I'm thinking about planting trees along the road here at home to permanently make it so the plot is not able to be seen from the road. Both so deer feel more comfortable and people can't see the deer. What would be the best option to plant in moderate sandy soils that would both grow fast and thrive in this ground? I'm using corn to do this but it would be nice to have something else. Thanks.

Would Norway spruce work? White pine? Do deer up that way eat all of those? I'm guessing those are the two fastest growers.

The only evergreens I'll ever plant again are white, black hills, and black spruce. Black wouldn't do well on sandy soils without a high water table.

Deer eat the fuck out of everything else here And we have a lot of deer around Black hills a good choice then ? Pros cons vs black hills and white ?

Black hills is a selection of white spruce that naturally occurs in SoDak. It apparently evolved there and does better in lighter soils and windier conditions than does regular white spruce. I think white will grow a little faster than BH, but neither is going to set any speedy growth records.

I'm not a cager/matter/fertilizer of evergreens and I don't spray around them to control competition. I imagine if you bought 1-2, or 2-2 bareroot trees, used 4x4' lumite or similar around them, watered during dry spells, and threw a handful of 10-10-10 at them annually after the first year you could have some pretty darn nice trees in 5-6 years. If you started with plugs, planted them and walked away it would likely be closer to 10-12 years for 8-10' trees.

I’ve had good luck with white spruce where deer numbers are high.
Watering the first year or two would help since they seem to start growing slowly. But after a few years 18” of annual growth is normal.

How many rows do you have room for?
Do Jack pine grow in your area and not get heavily browsed?
I was thinking one row of jacks for quick growth and one row of white spruce. If you have total blow sand, forget the spruce.

Black Hills Spruce will grow about a foot/1.5 a year.

What kind of spacing am I looking at for black hills spruce ? I can do as many rows as I want. It just takes up more of the plot acres then.

If you have total blow sand, forget the spruce. It’s not full blown sand. It’s like a good drainage organic sand. Soil is dark black in this area. Cation exchange capacity of 15 so it holds nutrients and water. High organic matter to.
