I'm not big into special "days" of the year, but I have always looked at Earth Day as a day for planting trees. I haven't not planted at least a few trees on Earth Day every year but one (2015 I think, we still had snow and frost in the woods) since sometime in the mid-1990s. This will be the second year...I'm not planting trees through 5-6" of snow, 20 something degree temps, and windchills in the mid teens.

I used to have a passion for planting trees, earth day or not. I do think we need an earth day so people actually remember to take care of it.

I had every intention of planting some evergreen plugs today, but I just can't make myself go out there in this weather. To be honest, I don't know if I could a shovel in the ground where I want to plant them anyway.

Oh, I know it won't hurt dormant trees to plant in this kind of weather. The windchill is 15 right now. It's a "me" issue, not a "tree" issue.

I need to get outside and do things, but so far sitting under a quilt feels dang good. Maybe nap time.

We typically clean up about 500 yards of roadside garbage that accumulates throughout the winter in our ditch. Both sides of the road. Gets to be a heavy bag or two. Pretty sad.

My former neighbor in Missouri used to throw all his beer cans in the ditch next to our farm. Specifically Miller 32oz cans. Piles of them. So the wife and me cleaned the up and set the bag at the end of his driveway. Next year same thing, he didn’t get the hint. So I cleaned up the cans again and dumped them in the ditch by the end of his driveway. Still didn’t get the hint. Never did or didn’t care.

Budweiser and Bud Light led the way in our ditch today. Got one side done and everyone was cold so we’ll do the other side tomorrow.

We usually pick up the garbage as we take spring walks along our property. I have picked a few small grocery bags, but snow cover has hidden lots of the cans.

We have an abandoned shit hole as our nearest neighbor. There are barrels and water tanks among all sorts of garbage and a couple abandoned vehicle. It’s a shame what they let the place become. I think they just moved instead of cleaning it up.
Every time we have a major spring runoff we get debris from their place at our place. My FIL would just clean it up and not say anything.
There’s a new sheriff in town. I just piled the filthy stuff on their front porch this morning. I still can’t get to the large broken up plastic deer blind that is in our creek yet. When I can, I’ll drag it up to their place and leave it in the driveway.

I did my Earth Day on Thursday. A group from my work picked up trash on a mile stretch of highway near our work. We end up with 30 large trash bags of garbage. No dead bodies or wallets found. Lots of 32oz beers and White Claws, mini nip bottles, vape pens, and large coffee cups. One bud light can. One Dodge Ram hubcap. I put on 6 miles as the roadsides were 60+ yards deep on both sides do lots of room for trash.

We used to pick up the trash along our .75ish mile ditches each spring. After coming across numerous meth (crack?) pipes, needles, and other paraphernalia, we quit.
At least one local dairy outfit was in the habit of dumping dead calfs in our ditch until we moved here and started discussing that activity locally. They must have found more discreet places now...
