I stop by Missouri to plant a bunch of corn for the kids this year. None of them here because they are working all over the country. And of course none of the equipment was ready to go. So I spent Friday fixing shit, sat fixing shit while I was planting and will be fixing more shit today. 😡😡

Deer are piling into the alfalfa fields. This got me to thinking about the reproductive and antler growth benefits of our deer herds as to two properties owned by other forum members. Foggy and Stu are both within about 60 miles. I don’t think either has alfalfa fields nearby. Spring also approached much later for foggy’s area. Deer still look rough up there, but are starting to slick up down here.

I haven't seen any bucks yet, so time will tell how winter impacted their health (and antler growth). There's a few alfalfa fields within 5-7 miles, but none that impact "my" deer. Deer here are keeping all of my clover looking like putting greens. That'll remain true until the rest of the woods greens up.

Really tough/weird sitting here watching the self propelled fertilizer spreader going back and fourth in the field and I won't be working the ground or planting. I did go pick a few rocks for the kid farming our place, so I felt like I was doing something.

Tonight I dug up the ground I’ll be planting to corn shortly. Part of this area was soybeans last year and part was planted to oats early followed up with brassicas in July.
That early season oats followed by brassicas really seems good for the soil. There was still a little oat straw residue, but the brassica melted back into the soil and gave it the texture of potting soil. The thick layer of deer poop in this area helped as well

After the hail and rain last night, I decided to broadcast some radish and turnips seed in the corn plot. I am probably too short on herbicide carryover but the ground is wet at least 5-6 inches down and the same in my hauled out garden. I also threw some years old sorghum seed out there. 30 yards away and I. The same foodplot, the soil is only damp about 3/4 inch down.

I'm starting to think fall brassicas are going to be a waste of time this year. The ground is so dry, even if we got a 2" rainfall, it wouldn't get the ground wet enough for a spray/pray mow/throw whatever type of planting. Do you go ahead and throw the seed out (no fertilizer) and hope to get lucky, or just to hell with it for the year?

I'm tilling so not worried about needing a big rain to get things going but you definitely need consistent rain to make it happen. Not doing anything until August so there's still time to assess.

Throw/mow does need at least a week longer than traditional seeding to get going. Much later than the end of the first week of August cuts things pretty short up here. I will likely just go with a straight forage radish planting if I do anything. Those seem to grow the fastest of the brassicas.

Have to get it sprayed this weekend if that's going to happen. Probably won't hunt up there again but you never know.

Waste of time is one thing but also a waste of money it seems with throwing seed down that likely won't even germinate and if it does likely won't get to maturity. I don't know of any other options to be honest. Might just have to roll into the season hoping my clover hangs on.

I won't waste money on fertilizer unless/until I knew the seed had taken. This year, I probably won't even try to time a rain after planting. Just not worth it. A few $20s on some seed won't kill me. A few $100s on fertilizer seems like a waste this year. I've got clover in a number of plots, so at least the does will keep hanging around all fall. Should also have some pumpkins here and there. There also looks to be a decent crop of acorns and wild crabs. I'd like to get an acre of brassicas going on the neighbor's place, but he may be better off just going with the weeds/clover he currently has.

I'm also seeing a decent crop of acorns this year as well which I'm happy about. Put up a new blind this weekend in a new spot to potentially sit on acorns. You planning on overseeding any Fixation/Balansa in your clover plots if you don't go brassica route?

I will probably throw out some left over medium red clover instead.

Why not try winter rye or tridicale? We plant that stuff from mid August to early September and the deer always hit it good.
