As trees get to around 5-6 years old, I've been removing the woven polypro landscape cloth. One thing I've noticed is that ants must really love living under the stuff because most every piece I've removed has led to me finding lots of ants and anthills/mounds. I'm wondering if using the stuff isn't that good of an idea...
Anybody else notice ants living under the lumite/woven polypro?

I have deff seen that, I was just using painters black plastic around my trees and they did the same things when I would remove it 3 years later. Ants pharm aphids, makes you wonder if you're making your own problem worse or not.

This creates honeydew to feed aphids and other insects...and that creates black soot on the trunks. I'm going to leave the woven polypro in place that I currently have down, but I won't be buying more for fruit trees. I think it does a lot of good when it comes to keeping the dripline clean of weeds and in drastically reducing watering needs...but it also creates some other issues.

I had ants under the mat of one of those on Anty rootstocks that I had pictures in another thread. That was last year.
