Well this morning A mile from our land almost hit a huge buck with pickup truck. Pretty quiet, only a few shots close. This little buck came into grunt call this morning. Told him to send his grandpa.

So far this opener is looking like the worst I've experienced in a long time. A doe and fawn right at first light and that's been it. Also, think this is the fewest gun shots I've heard as well. That part doesn't break my heart. Need these 2 and 3 yr old bucks to make it.

Yesterday I sat with my wife in deer blind. Told her she gets 1st Crack at what ever buck comes out. A little after 7:00 am I did little grunting on grunt tube and a little 4 point buck came out to 20 yards from blind. I asked if she was going to shoot it, she replied too small. So we sat the rest of day not seeing another deer until the last 10 minutes. Then it was like you turned on a switch. 1st a fawn, than a doe. Than a doe and 2 fawns. Than a 2 year old half rack 8 point and then a wide heavy 10 point 4 or 5 year old. This is all happening about 95 yards across food plot. My wife gets her 7mm-08 out the window on good solid rest. All 7 deer are sort of milling around feeding. This was making it hard for my wife to get a shot. She had to keep waiting for other deer to clear. Finally she has a clear shot. Buck was broadside with just a slight quartering away. I am watching all this in binocs. She takes the shot, the buck goes sideways and jumps simultaneously. I figured he was going down right there, but regains his feet and heads off food plot and into woods. I look at my wife, she is usually pretty calm when shooting game but she is shaking and completely unraveled. We pack our stuff up. Get out of blind walk across food plot to look for blood fully expecting to see buck just into woods. We get there no blood and no deer. I had called my son to give us assistance. He got there we looked for 2 hours and found nothing. We went back today and combed every where on our 40 for 4 hours and found nothing. I was in places on our land that We have not been in since we bought land over 19 years ago. In all my years I have never saw an animal get hit that hard and not leave a blood trail. To say my wife is a little bummed out would be an under statement. I told her ithappens to every body if you hunt long enough. So now I have to wait a day or two for deer to come back. I wanted to find this so bad as it would of been her biggest buck and would have gone to taxidermist.

I think I shot that deer two years later as a nontypical. I will never know for sure, but the good side of the rack looked similar. You or her might get another chance. I also remember MO’s story about the buck with his arrow in it.
