I thought we had a crossbow thread, but a quick search showed nothing.
I'm strongly considering buying a crossbow this year. A de-cocking feature would be nice I think. Where does a guy start?

Ravin or 10 point are both top of the line with cranks for cocking or decoding. Both brands have their pros and cons. You don't need any thing faster than 400 fps. With that said I have a Ravin R9 that I bought in 2016. All I have done with it is change strings and cables every 2 years per mfg recommendations. They don't make R9 any more. They replaced with R10. My Ravin is very accurate. Target shooting out to 80 yards I can hit bullseye. 50 yards is my max range for hunting.

If both are about equal in performance I'd be looking at cost. Do you have any experience with 10PT? If your Ravin has been good to you I would give it an edge. My 10Pt which is about 10 years old, has been trouble free but I can't say anything about Ravin.

We had a shoot off, starting at 20 yards. Hit bullseye and move target out 10 yards. Miss you were eliminated. All 3 of the Ten points that brothers had were eliminated at 60 yards. I kept going out to 80 yards, hit bullseye at 80 yards and had to stop as we ran out of space. All shooting was done on a rest.

I'm of the mindset you don't need a $2500 Ravin, you don't need an $1100 mission, myself and a few friends have centerpoint, they are fast, quiet, & accurate, and $250-$350, what more do you need. Take care of the string, shoot it 10x a year and it'll last a long while.

Are Wicked Ridge x-bows a cheaper version of 10 point? Yes thanks Tom, I just contacted my nearest pro shop. They carry some Wicked Ridge models. I will probably go check them out when I get home

Take care of the string, shoot it 10x a year and it'll last a long while. They may cost less but you have to cock with a string and shoot them to de-cock. As a person gets older the cocking procedure gets a lot harder with any crossbow that doesn't have a crank. Also you can get a Ravin R10 for a lot less than $2500, more like the 1250 to 1500 range.

I just don't need to spend that kind of $ to kill a deer. We all got our things I guess. LOL. Don't get me wrong I've spent $ like that before but the older I get the less I identify with those kind of priorities. But if you got F you $ what do you care what you spend.

When I walked out of the pro shop with my Mathews Switchback/new arrows/broadheads/release sometime in the mid 2000s, I left without about $1200 in my checking account.
If I can get set up with a crossbow package for that much or less now, I'll be pretty happy.

I can’t speak to brands since I’ve only shot Parker for a couple decades.
But I bought my daughter a youth crossbow several years ago. When I do choose to carry a crossbow I always take her youth model and never the full size. It shoot thru a whitetail easily and is a lot lighter and compact. I really like hunting with a youth model.
