Nice job. I planted a bunch of bare root ROD last spring & the deer hammered them. Might be a few bare stems left. I knew they browsed them, but didn't know they were like candy. Where are you planting yours?

They're going to be stationed around different parts of the property to be seed bushes for their area. These will end up in cages right away with full ground cover to ensure they produce and the birds haul off the seed for natural dispersal. I just have to follow them with the chainsaw to facilitate an opening.

Day 18 update. Out of about 60 cuttings, I figure I've got about ten that are dead or dying. There are more that look healthy, but they're not growing much, and the rest that are slowly moving ahead. Here's where we started. Same pot today. Here's the best looking pot.

They look great.
Makes a person think they could do the same thing with left over scion. I have a few I will give it a try.

I pulled one out that was nearly dead, and it did have a root coming off it. So I hope the tough ones can still pull out of it.

I planted a bunch of dogwoods near my wetland areas. At first I thought it was a waste, but I'm real happy I did. Fairly good survival, deer and pheasants constant use.
A great shrub for winter browsing.

Following the "best looking" pot from above, it's only been three days since that picture, and the best ones are starting to elongate now. Here's May 4th Here's the same pot today May 7th. The warmth and sunshine must have really helped kick them into gear.

New development today from the most famous dogwood patch in Lincoln County. I noticed new growth coming out from under where (underwear) I cut extra branches off.

This is turning into a great learning experience. I had mentioned there are a few that look dead and a bunch I'd classify as "un-dead" as of now. I found one today that looks like it's pulling out of the un-dead class. I figured this thing was done as the original foliage looked like it was done for. Then I see new life popping out of these branch collars.

I have lots of red osier at the farm, some that have not been used much because of 6-10 feet tall. I pruned them back to 3 feet, and took the pruned pieces and planted them, might work!

I'm throwing in the towel. This experiment went bust. All was well until I went up for a three day weekend. It got hot and they couldn't take three days without watering. I lost all the thinner ones and the thicker ones have been getting sicker and more yellow as time has gone on. In hindsight, I think if I had them in tubs and submerged the pots up to 50% in water they may have done better. Timing the cuttings sooner may have helped too.

Bummer SD.
Could you have moved the pots out of the sun for the weekend? Maybe even bring them inside?

Resurrecting this idea. I have today off (tomorrow not so much. Fuck off blizzard). I am going to head over to my local Menards and check out some low edge totes for putting my pots in so I can really soak these pots. I had half considered starting my cuttings inside right when I take them late winter. I have a gray haired grazer now, so that may not work, or I have to put up an exclusion cage in my apartment.
