Here’s a good video of a Vermont orchard that has original trees from the 1920’s that they get e too worked over to heirloom varieties. They started renovating the orchard in the 1990s. It shows the spacing that they do. They remove one upright each year until it is closed up.

It shows the spacing that they do. They remove one upright each year until it is closed up. Those old trees are pretty impressive. The top working they are doing is crazy. They got trunks that appear to be a foot in diameter. Once established, a big old orchard like that could be a wildlife draw for a lifetime with little more than mowing every few years to kill off tree competition. That’s what I’m hoping to have eventually.

Added some scion to the central leader and a different one on a branch. Cleft graft for both.

I grafted 20 undersized red splendor seedling rootstock tonight. I was able to find scion that matched the rootstock, so I’m hoping for decent success.

Today I potted the apple trees I grafted earlier in the week. The rootstock was pretty small, but I’m still hopeful that I’ll have some success.

I'd guess that about 2/3 appear to have taken, but I'm hoping that a few more will pop in the coming weeks. That rootstock was pretty tiny, but I was still hoping for more success than that. I potted a few of the smallest rootstock without grafting to them and they only have a little growth, so they are definitely not setting any records.
The two grafted trees that were too small to plant last year are looking good though and have put on a lot of growth.
