Just tried some grafting on a tree in my backyard. My scion had some mold on them, is that a deal breaker?

Not completely covered but some of the buds were. The wood looked good when I sliced it. The buds have just started to open, I actually think they might be blossoms but I have never had blossoms on these trees so I am not sure. It has been 80 last two days so everything has poped fast.

Did you take any photos of the scions and the tree you're grafting too?? Did you seal the tip and other cuts up with wax or parafilm?

Time will tell Chummer. Your trees are a week or two ahead of mine. The one graft scion on the left side of the next to last photo doesn't look too good but, the others look good to me. What's the weather forecast for the next week? Rain or sun?

What's the weather forecast for the next week? Rain or sun? No rain mon or Tuesday then 40% chance everyday till Sunday. Temps 55-65 no frost.

Some people bag the grafts with plastic baggies to keep moisture in scion. I don't think I'd do the bagging if I were you. I think your scions will do much better if the mold doesn't come back and hit the scions so keeping then dryer in the air the first few days should help.

This guy has a lot of knowledge on grafting, pruning, growing apples from seed, breeding your own strain of apples etc.
Here is. A series of videos on making over an apples to to 5 varieties. Good info on pruning to train branches and create fruit buds.

Did he used to go by Turkey song or some such thing?
Last spring I followed his technique when trying to breed crab apples.

I spent yesterday at my farm and top worked quite of few trees. All of these trees were grafted to Red Splendor crabapple that were part of a mass CRP planting. I wanted to share a couple of photos and comment on the knife I purchased for this work. The knife is a Bahco knifeand worked very well for me on trees that are less than 2" in diameter. Knife was razor sharp and I used a tach hammer to drive it through larger trunks. The knife has a short brass blade that works well for spreading small diameter trees and helps you focus getting the scion in the right position. Centennial grafted and hopefully sucessful. I'll have to look where I bought this knife as i think I paid about $17 and I see on Amazon its $38. It worked very well for me and I recommend it for small diameter trees.
