I did nto wrap the last few cleft grafts. but just coated them with toilet bowl wax. should I have done so?
Grafting tape did not seem all of that tight to hold things together. It would probably help keep moisture out.

I always wrap them with something. I guess you'll find out if it's necessary or not

Thanks for sharing FB, good luck on the grafts Thanks, your Long Prairie Crab was one of the Scion I used. I'm at the farm both Saturday and Sunday this coming weekend and will be doing more grafting as well as planting ROD (For Pheasants) Lylacs (for my wife and I). The wife is cominh with me and I am putting her to work.
I'm grafting mostly to Crabs that the deer have partially destroyed (tore branches of and browsed way down). I'm cutting most of the branches back leaving just a few and then grafting my variety and for now tubing them. For the grafts that take, next spring I will remove the tube and put concrete mesh around them.

^^^I've seen folks using strips of old garbage bags on bigger stumps. This year I used some surveyor tape on a couple cleft grafts, we'll see how that works.

Could you strip cut wax paper? You could fold it over and double the strength and then just tape the end to hold it in place. Just make sure where you end your strip is the place you could tape.

I'm not sure wax paper would hold up long enough?

^^^^
I'm not going to worry too much about the Geneva rootstock. I bought 10 G935 rootstock this spring for home. If they make 20 years I'll be happy. If they don't I have plenty on my land. The reference seems to be speculation but, has there been any known issues? The people on that Fruit Growing website talk a little over my head sometimes.

On my soils, it looks like 25 years is about all we can get from antanovka. Maybe it is a result of my poor care of trees.

Thanks Stu. Figures I'd buy that type. I grafted some heirlooms. If they die then I'll move on.
