My oldest son and I have made a goal to add an orchard on our main 40, and then plant small plot orchards on the other properties. We have added the following, Fireside and Prairie Magic as two to add that look interesting (early producers) and cold hardy.

You guys will have fun establishing an orchard(s) and reaping the benefits in a few years

Ac ouple of years ago, Lee and I attended a fruit tree meeting in Staples t Central Lakes College. It was right after that winter with long cold periods. One of the fruit growers there said Norland came through the winter well and still produced fruit. It might be a good choice for an earlier apple. I grafted one with scion from an orchard in Little Falls.

So are most of the cold tolerant apples early ripening and droppers?

So are most of the cold tolerant apples early ripening and droppers? I spent some time trying to figure that out in my dad's orchard. By November, the orchard was damn near bare, but there were a few rows that were holding apples very well. I think I had it nailed down to sweet sixteen and harrelson that were cold tolerant late hangers, at least at my dad's. Don't quote me on that. It's been a while.

My neighbor on the lake has Haralson and it is full every year. Right now it is still full top to bottom. Definitely going to plant a few. I think I have one planted now, I should keep better track.

I have two trees that I believe are Haralson. Awesome tasting and are just becoming ripe.

I've got 42 - 4th leaf trees in the ground. Most grew a few apples this year. Most have thrived with my pampering. But none have thrived like the Haralsons. I have 4 that all look similar to this. In addition, they seem to be incredibly disease resistant. Great variety!

Other apples you guys may want to look at are Parkland and Quebec Belle. SLN have them. They both have survived -50.

Earlier in this thread i stated that Fireside are super disease susceptible at my place. I sprayed them 3 times this year and they responded really well.
I ate one yesterday. It started sweet and finished with a face puckering tart. I liked it.

Your description is appreciated, Fireside doesn't sound like my kind of apple.

We planted a Fireside this year, and it really took off. This could be a real go to. A friend of mine has one planted north of Starbuck and it is one of the nicest young apple trees I have ever seen. Full of apples again, I'll get pics.
