some are planted in the past couple years. Some are probably 6 to 8 years in the ground. So a mix. I just got looking at them and mainly wanted to cut off branches that have broken, and branches that are reaching out far enough that they are reaching into neighboring trees.... yea, I planted them 8 to 10 ft apart over the years. before I knew what I was really doing.
And zero clue what a leaf stage is..... I read all the apple info on here and simply go cross eyed. LOLLL

I personally wouldn't be pruning now. Open pruning wounds are an invitation to insects and disease.

I’d wait until next February or March to do them then. As Stu said the risk of disease would be increased now and you’d be limiting their spring growth.

I thought kid did a good job explaining pruning on trellis systems. Sone things do apply to wildlife apples. He’s from Waffler Nursery in New York.

I've also noticed that some varieties of apples tend to have more difficulty healing than others. Maybe these issues would be reduced with a cleaner cut. One variety that comes to mind is Honeycrisp. I don't know if I just have a weak honeycrisp or if they are all like that, but that tree seems to have that black soot issue more than any other.

Question for someone who knows more about apples than me. Can you prune trees now, most leaves are off the trees, need lower branches pruned.

Question for someone who knows more about apples than me. Can you prune trees now, most leaves are off the trees, need lower branches pruned. I always prune in late winter/early spring. I would be concerned about potential winter injury if you pruned now. I don't think there would be an advantage to pruning now, so I'd hold off until March.

My body must be used to the warm weather we had last week since I just froze my butt off pruning a half dozen apple trees.
I’m back inside now and my toes are cold. 12 degrees and wind is pretty normal February weather, but It felt damn cold today.
