The deer aren't cleaning up the apples like they have in years past. I think the big crop of acorns and lots of other food in the area has them staying away. I picked up a half bucket of rotten apples so that disease can't carry over on them this winter. I'm shocked that I didn't get stung. I left all the apples that weren't rotting. I picked these ones along with a few more for grandma to make a few batches of apple sauce. If I remember it's what I believe to be a Haralson up close, Arkansas Black in the middle, and I believe A Macintosh in back. These are all some of the bigger fruit I have seen from the trees.

I am attempting my first spray, throw, my in the old part of the orchard with clover and rye. I've never tried it before and wanted to try it here so that I didn't have to disturb the roots. It's growing great!

I am attempting my first spray, throw, my in the old part of the orchard with clover and rye. I've never tried it before and wanted to try it here so that I didn't have to disturb the roots. It's growing great! My brassica plots are all spray, throw and mow. If I get decent rain for germination they usually turn out ok. Getting that 2nd good rain after they're up is also key. The rain shut off when I planted this year but I didn’t mow the weeds and that’s basically what saved my plots. Held enough moisture for them to thrive even with minimal rain, 0.1” at a time. I also do the same for clover plots. I threw winter rye on my brassicas a few weeks after planting and that also came up well.

A couple of pics from the past couple of weeks. Haralson just tastes so good. Tree was loaded with big apples this year. I spent a lot if time hand thinning that sucker and it really helped. The brassica plot is getting just hammered. The cage has nice big radishes, outside not the case. Wish I woulda planted a week or two earlier. I painted my trees last week, but didn't get any pics. Here was a before shot of one I had painted two or three years ago.

My haralson dropped before Oct. 1 and they had no flavor. Haralred tastes great after the frost.

That's very weird, Art, does that usually happen with that tree? I'm sure mine would be hanging for a long while if my aunts didn't pick the rest of the fruit last week!

I wonder if the tree is sick. There is a slight difference in drop times of haralson and haralred.

Nice tour, Corey! Your Grandma sounds like an interesting lady.
Pears have been pretty much a failure for me. Do you have light soil?
We hit minus 34 this winter and maybe I will now have a reason cut down the last pear tree. I am probably about 100 miles straight west of you.
I would watch for a root sucker from those old trees. Keep one and nurse it along so you can topwork it when the old trees finally die.

That was great small chunk. As a new fruit tree grower it’s always nice to see some videos of others trees and how they have them pruned. Looking good!

Cool video and tour. That's pretty nice that you have some mature in addition to your new ones. You have a really nice looking place there.

Thanks for the kind words, guys! I promise that they will get better with time! I did some pruining ones too that I will put up soon.
Art- light sandy soil there for sure! Are you thinking that might be a reason for our poor results? Great idea on the root sucker!
SD- no antlers in the corn. Deer left about mid January when my food left for the most part and have taken residence to a standing corn field about a mile away! Thanks for the phone tip!
