If you live close to your property, trapping the gophers is likely your best bet. My kids and I caught 20 of them last year off our 40 acre property that we live on. I prefer box and pan traps, but I know a lot of guys like the death clutch traps.

I think these videos will be fun to look back to in the future! SC, I'd try to get a metal emt stake in near that upright this year and tie off on it in a couple places to give it support. It's going to have some fruit and the weight could bend it or snap it. Your pruning has made a difference on it. Good job!!

Wish the snow wouldn't have came and shut me down from doing things today on my day off! Nice work!! Do you think you'll take a few more of those poplars? Do you spray the stumps? Do you think the next round will be back further that they won't hit your cages? They look like they will miss them.

I need to invest in a few more!

If you continue another 20 yards it's the property line. Idk how much more I want to take for now? I didn't spray the stumps, I'll leave them for deer browse. I did take two more down after I had already video taped. I think I would still have to place the trees as they are taller than the ones I took. I really need to buy some wedges!

SC,
Wedges will help drop the tree slowly right where you want it if the tree is 8" + where you're cutting it. You need enough meat on the tree to leave a 1" hinge strip and room to slip the wedge in and pull the bar out. Then tap in the wedges until it starts to pop and move to your safe zone.
The reason why I asked about your spraying the poplar stumps is that they'll root sprout so if they have roots out near the apple trees in the field they'll pop up some new shoots to form new trees.

Yep, I've used them before when I cut trees when working on the farm. Definitely would make things a little more safe!
I never thought about poplar stumps doing that.....If they end up doing that, I guess I will cross that bridge when it comes. It is clover all the way up to where that stack of wood is, so if they root sprout, maybe it will just be another thing for the deer to browse. If they don't, they will get mowed down with the 1 or 2 mowings I will do during the year.

Nice find on that apple SC!! You're doing a great job dropping those poplar without hitting your cages. Was that apple part of the original orchard?

I have been trying to go slow while doing it, that has helped. I definitely had a couple of them go real close and they made my ass pucker! Lol The apple I found is actually in a different location that I hunt. I've found one wikd Apple and 5 crabs out there so far. Not sure what kind this one will be!

Are you able to do habitat work on that land and clear around that tree? I can pretty much do what I want around there! I had my silky with me on this day and ended up cutting down 5-6 trees that were either growing through or right next to that tree. Once I bring my chainsaw I will cut some more!
