June 6 I moved these to my porch today to get them out of the rain. We've had lots of rain the past 3 days and we're due for 2" more today so I figured they didn't need tge rain. I'm debating to let the 3 branches grow on this one and prune next February for scions. This one has always been behind the others but, is catching up.

I forgot to mention I grafted 100 rootstock this spring back in March. I did it in 2 nights. When I finished I went to bed. I woke up realizing I forgot to graft the Colorado Orange scions. So I jumped out of bed. Got my grafting stuff back out. Cut off the grafts from some rootstock and grafted these.

Allowing the one graft to grow a few branches for scions makes sense to me.

I like the side branches for scion wood as well, i mean if there just happen to be some folks around here that would want some.

I'll be honest. I haven't spent much time with my grafts this summer. There was rain every week but, one so I only watered once this year compared to every week last year. The grafts hit a bad spell in mid July with so much rain there was some browning of tge leaves. May have been apple scab but, all look well now. I don't think the Colorado Orange were affected by that. The Colorado Orange have been tucked in with other grafts all year and have done well. I could've pruned them to one leader but, I purposely sacrificed leader growth for scion wood. I could have could've done some tbud grafts but, then I'd have lost a lot of buds for scion wood. So the good news is there should be scionwood in February or March. I'll keep these at home over winter and cut them then. One took off and is over 3'. The others are shorter but, have multiple branches. Stu and BV will be getting scions if all goes well.

NH did you lose your photobucket or go over its wanted cargo storage? Will you have any of this scion this year? BV, photo Bucket hijacked most everyone's accounts last fall and held them hostage. I should have the Colorado Orange scions for you but it may take some time. We got hit with lots of snow and then ice. They're currently under snow with a thick crust. Ill keep you posted. I haven't forgot you.

BV,
We're due for another foot of snow tomorrow and I can't even see the scion seedlings because they're already buried in snow. We're looking at a warm up next week so maybe towards the end of the month or early March.

Well bad news I guess. I heard from the Colorado Orange people. DNA tests of their mother tree show that it is a York Apple. Does that mean the original Colorado Orange was a York or does it mean the tree was mislabeled down through the years? Not sure but, it shows that you should label your trees with tags so they don’t get mislabeled for future generations.
