Ever drive past a hybrid poplar "block" after they go through and stump cut them? The whole damn field/block will be full of 4-10' stump sprouts in a year.

Borders a HP farm-160 acres. He said its full of deer, they found 6 shed antlers on it--nice ones too. New growth is so thick you can hardly walk in it.

Anybody ever top cut a few every year to see if it would be a shrub? I was thinking of that to the other day when I was looking at mine, I will have to try it. There are several cleared fields close to us that I wanted to stop and get some really nice cuttings from this spring, Im pretty sure they wouldn't have cared if I cut a few

I did a search for hybrid poplars and this seemed to be the best thread. Figured I'd resurrect it.
I've got a few spots where I've laid lumite down in a section of RCG swamp. I had planted silver maples there, but only 2 survived. Now, I'm thinking I could just shove 3-5' hybrid poplar sticks/whips into the soil this fall. I could just lush them down through the existing openings in the lumite. Maybe drive a pilot hole with a sledge and a section of re-bar.
Weeping willow may also be worth a shot.
At any rate, I don't have any mature HPs or WWs. Does anybody have some of either or both where I could get some 3-5' limb sections/cuttings this fall?

I always planted them in the spring. Why not shove some willows in those opening now?

I imagine they'd take off and survive if we continue to get rain. On my old place, I cut some 1/2-3/4" caliper x 3-5' long HP sticks one fall. Shoved them in the ground most of the way and did nothing else. The following spring they all took off. Some put on 10' of growth the first year. I wouldn't expect that here, but 5' wouldn't surprise me. I'm just trying to get some shade on the RCG as well as possible suckering/spreading by seed. edit...just remembered I also took chunks of WW logs and threw them on some wet ground one year down there. I was just getting rid of the wood...but they turned into sprouting clumps of WW. The last time I looked at them they were multiple 5"ish caliper trunks. I think if a guy sprayed off some areas of RCG, then threw down 5' chunks of WW logs you could get some cover in a hurry.

It doesn’t seem to be completely hardy from here north. It does ok in a few locations, but hasn’t survived well for me. August drought and cold winter combination I suspect are the problems.

There are some WW around, but I agree about them being only partially winter hardy. It seems once they're mature, they do okay.

^ I have often thought about adding hybrid Willow or poplar to my northern marsh. I have a large area that does not grow grass and is muck. It always has about 2-3" of water on it and I always wondered if a large cutting would survive. I never pursued it as I am not certain how I would get it planted.

I've tried a few here (some I brought from my old place, some others were from Cold Stream Farm) and they survive for a few years, then a cold winter takes 'em out. If I ever tried them again, I'd find a local source. I kind of kick myself for not grabbing some sticks off a few trees by Osakis. Now with hwy. 27 construction those trees have been removed. HPs on the other hand seem pretty bullet proof.
