Well that was a dud. I decided to quit when I couldn't get the first one opened up cleanly. Wrapped it back shut and called it.

I don't think the bark was slipping very well. I also was having trouble detaching the bud from the stick. I'll try again next month maybe.
I did take the opportunity to practice with my knife. That was handy.

Hang in there SD. I had problems last fall. The next week I was able to graft. The issue was the bud I grafted wasn't mature. The beauty of it is you can snatch scions next February and cleft graft next April or May.

The beauty of it is you can snatch scions next February and cleft graft next April or May. I may have to muster up the gumption to get that figured out. The dew point was up there today, and I reaffirmed my total disdain for mid summer habitat work.

I checked some trees I was going to grab bud wood from and they hadn't produced the bud yet so I'll wait another week or two. .
