I'm bored. Looking for a patio project. I have talked about trying ROD cutting in a size 6 styro tray. I've also got some 3 gallon pots that are about 10" deep. I'm looking to try growing a ROD super pot that would have about a dozen cuttings in one. The idea then being to transplant the super bush later on this year. My question is, is now a good time to go snip ROD cuttings and try to get them going, or should I wait?
I'd take cuttings where I could get two leaf collars into the dirt, and one above and fill with potting soil. What do ya think?

When I pruned the rod on our land, took the cuttings and pushed them in the ground. Do not know if it works, but am only out the time.

I found a huge wild dogwood bush growing behind the maintenance shed out by the football field in the town our shop is located. No worries about stealing cuttings there, the damn thing is growing a foot from the building, and I'm sure they'd wish it dead if they ever did anything with it. I got my loppers and ziplock with me. Should be able to steal some this afternoon and get them going tonight.

Whip gave me my own advice, so I took a stab at it. Here's my subject bush from Centerville, SD. Here's the rough cuts I got off the bush. After I got them all cleaned up and trimmed to size. I got about 3-4 leaf collars below soil for the one above. Got my rooting hormone mixed up and ready for the dip and stick. All done. And the close up. Now I'm just working on watering them slowly to make sure I get the whole pot soaked but I don't drench the neighbors below me. I also went back and snipped some of the tops down to a single leaf collar above ground.

No signs of dying off yet. They're actually showing some sign of leafing out further. I had mentioned I went back and pruned more after these pics were taken. Here's a Monday vs tonight pic. Some of the limbs are missing, but look at the leaf development from Monday to today on the one in the circle and the one to the left of it. They're opening up a little more. I hope they're taking, and not just living off the juice in the cutting. Monday Thursday

Week two update: Despite the piss poor cold cloudy weather, these things are moving along. I wonder if I should snip off those fruit clusters that are getting going? Day one Day twelve

Nice SD,
You'll have work to do this fall.
In the future, I'm wondering if you dipped the top cut part of the cutting in melted paraffin wax if it would keep them from drying out more and improve survival?
I think it helped keep my apple scions fresher and better survival after grafting.

Noted. I wondered about that today myself.

I think you'll be ok because you'll be watering them so maybe it's not necessary. I bet you have good survival rates.

It's looking good now. I just wonder if those fruit clusters won't demand more than the feeble roots can supply. Anybody? Any ideas?

I'd say it's always a good idea to remove blossoms and/or fruit clusters from any cutting or first year bareroot planting.

I agree with stu, leaves are ok(in moderation) because they will produce the needed photosynthesis for survival, "fruiting, budding, blooms, etc." are not necessary for the survival of the cutting and would come off as soon as they became visible if it were me. Just my $.02
