Sorry to you have gopher problems. Could you bury your cages 3-4" ? Would that deter them or do they dig deep? Can you shoot them like we do woodchucks? I'm not sure what's worse. Dealing with bear or gophers?

I hate pocket gophers. I spend a fair amount of time staying on top of them with poison. Seems to keep them at bay for awhile, then a new batch moves in (and I kill them...and so on, and so on, and so on....)

I hate gophers and trap them with a vengeance when I'm up on the properties. They'll kill a tree faster then anything.

FWIW - I learned this year that the strychnine grain used to poison pocket gophers also works just fine on lined ground squirrels (what I used to call gophers until I moved here).

Don't let the cat or dog get ahold of those striped gophers after poisoning. Some say it works on chipmunks, but I would not know. The strychnine is only approved for underground use. Carl, those gophers have tunnels that can be 18 inches down. Poison works best in the deep tunnels. I often add a a bit of the gopher bate to the hole when I plant the tree. I am not sure if it works, but it makes me feel better.

^^^good point on the pets and striped squirrels. Interesting enough, the only place I have striped squirrels is in my main (Beehive) orchard. Even more interesting is that there has never (knock on wood) been a pocket gopher mound there. I'm guessing that's because it is isolated from other areas. It has dirt road on two sides and the creek on the other. It is also where I see badgers every year.
My dog and cat are never in that area (half mile or so from the house), but I do have concerns about possibly killing scavengers.

Didn't satchmo tell he was isolated from pocket gophers for a period, then it changed? Satchmo??

We were fairly diligent on poisoning our pocket gophers for the past years. This year we had just a few gopher mounds in spring......now NONE! I hope iit stays that way.
I may try the strichnine poison on the chipmunks at my home. Never considered that until now.
