As I near retirement I have pondered the same thing. I chose to do what I was passionate about. The marine and snowmobile industries. Neither particularly high paying on the mechanical end of things. But I became very good at it and respected by my peers. I was able to work in the engineering dept of two boat mfgs and was a member of the ski doo factory race team for 10 years. Both afforded me travel opportunities that I would have never been able to afford on my own. Now I am in a profession that I am not passionate about and I am just hanging on until I can retire in a year or so. I would have been in great shape financially but I chose to get divorced at 58. Now I won't have unlimited spending but I will be fine. Everyone is different. I have never been motivated by money, more about being the best at what I do. I hear that. Would of been in fantastic shape but got divorced. But now I get to do what I want. Instead of being controlled.

Divorce at 40 screwed me up. I'll be good but not as good as I could have been.

Divorce at 40 screwed me up. I'll be good but not as good as I could have been. I feel for anyone that has gone thru divorce. Pretty hard to recover from that damage for many folks....especially when it comes late in life. As the old saying goes: Happy wife / Happy life.

Trouble is she was happy, I wasn't. I'm sure it's the best option for some folks.....No doubt. Just sucks....hard to overcome some of the baggage with that program. At least you recognized it at 40 and not later in life. All I can say.....I never walked in those moccasins.

I guess there are lots of ways to retire. I can envision some guys hanging out watching some work being done. I dunno. Not for me. Today my duagter, my grandson and his girlfriend came here. We went jet-skiing, then they paddle boarded (I watched) then we checked out the electronics on my fishing boat. Then a long pontoon ride for ice-cream at Maddens. A little walk....then back here where I caught a nice nap before we went to dinner on the lake. Then a campfire and drinks. Now Im winding down with a tall cooler. I have a good retirement IMO. If I had the other guys life.....I'm not sure how satisfied I would be. I suppose it's all relative to where you have been before?? FORE! One thing I've thought about extensively is how to live your working life vs retirement. Meaning: Option A: Do what makes you the most money during your working life. Potentially retire earlier. Have more money to spend during your retirement. Option B: Make a decent living but do what makes you happier and what you want to do during your working life. Potentially have to retire later. May have less money during your retirement. I've seen a lot of people do option A and never make it to retirement. Or have such poor health they can't do what they planned on. Or the die within the first few years after retirement. Option B sounds great but as Mo says, its good to make the money while you can. I'm going option C...combination of both. I've seen too many people not enjoy life while working and miss out. Too many people retire and die and too many people retire and not have shit other than SS. I enjoy life, I enjoy traveling. At the same time I have pretty earlier retirement goals to do those things more.

I'll try harder to meet your standards then. (or not) As Ricky Nelson once crooned....."you can't please everyone.....so you might as well please yourself". FORE! ......edit: and I believe it was Mic Jaegger who once sung: "you cain't always get what you wa-ant.....you cain't always get what you wa-ant......but if you try real hard.....you'll get what you need".
