Stopped at the post office today and looked across the parking lot..... Why are those guys in lawn chairs in a parking lot?? They were watching a guy replace the windshield in the green SUV with the doors open. Please tell me there is more to life than that in the golden years.... Foggy, Have you done this???

I drove past the "mature adult" apartments in L.P. today. 3 gals in their 70s sitting in lawn chairs under a shade tree. Weren't smoking, weren't drinking...just sitting.
Money is kind of important when you retire

I guess there are lots of ways to retire. I can envision some guys hanging out watching some work being done. I dunno. Not for me. Today my duagter, my grandson and his girlfriend came here. We went jet-skiing, then they paddle boarded (I watched) then we checked out the electronics on my fishing boat. Then a long pontoon ride for ice-cream at Maddens. A little walk....then back here where I caught a nice nap before we went to dinner on the lake. Then a campfire and drinks. Now Im winding down with a tall cooler. I have a good retirement IMO. If I had the other guys life.....I'm not sure how satisfied I would be. I suppose it's all relative to where you have been before?? FORE!

One thing I've thought about extensively is how to live your working life vs retirement. Meaning: Option A: Do what makes you the most money during your working life. Potentially retire earlier. Have more money to spend during your retirement. Option B: Make a decent living but do what makes you happier and what you want to do during your working life. Potentially have to retire later. May have less money during your retirement. I've seen a lot of people do option A and never make it to retirement. Or have such poor health they can't do what they planned on. Or the die within the first few years after retirement. Option B sounds great but as Mo says, its good to make the money while you can.

^ I chased option A pretty hard at times. Even gave up a trip on an African Safari and a Moose hunt to Norway......as I was busy running my cash cow at the time. I think you best make hay when the sun shines. My ship didnt always come in.....so when it did, I made sure I was going to stick to biz. I do see guys in retirement that do not have enough.....and folks that are able to do most of what they want. I try not to judge what people have decided to do with their time......but given a choice I still think option A is best. I suppose I've always played "for keeps". i.e. I play to win or go a bit over-and-above most other folks efforts. I think it's just the way you grow up or something? ......or you could always live close to MO? (thanks for the trip to the saloon MO ) FORE!

Don't push me into that nursing home gig too fast. I got lots more to do before I get a bus ride to the saloon. Grin.

I've been flat broke....and been happy - and sad at times too. I've had substantial wealth....and been happy - but there have been some sour times too. When the grim reaper shows up....all the wealth and possessions you HAD will not matter...except to your heirs. Until then....having enough does make a difference....often to a great extent to some folks. Others...not so much. But you can be happy either way.....or not. It's all a state of mind.
As the song by Kansas goes: Dust in the wind.........

Have you ever talked with business owners around your cabin (or further north)? My late wife and I used to vacation in Vilas/Oneida counties at least once a year, usually more. It was our dream for a number of years to move up there, but after talking with folks who had moved from more "populated" areas about the move...we decided it was better to vacation there than to live there. Most of the transplants we talked to did say the'd make the move again, but almost to the very last one of them they acknowledged they'd likely never be able to retire. They all were putting in more hours than they had been previously as well. Most folks in northern WI are working two jobs...or they are living in poverty...or both

Most folks in northern WI are working two jobs...or they are living in poverty...or both I think if I was farther north like the areas you speak of that would be the case. As it stands, I'm only 25 min from Wausau which holds good jobs. 20 min from Antigo which has a fair job market. And 20 min from Merrill which I'm not sure what the job market is there. I've been searching jobs in the Wausau market and there are good paying jobs that I'm qualified for on a regular basis. I have a degree that is pretty diversified so I can get jobs in many different areas. Combined with the fact I don't owe anything on the cabin so no mortgage and don't owe a penny to anyone (zero debt) I think that puts me in decent position to get it done.

Each person needs to ask themselves how they want to live their working and retired years. Depending on what your skills/desire are will dictate potential and then you need to judge which direction Is best for you.
There are retirement calculators that allow you to understand what you will need in retirement based on how you live and how long you live. Even if its not exact its a good exercise to go through as it gets you thinking about what you will need for retirement dollars and how your lifestyle will effect your savings requirements.
I'm well past this point in my life but realize my choice of A came at a cost as I gave up allot of things. At the same time, much my focus has been to be financially free which now that I have achieved it is very comforting.

I tired at 39. Been making money ever since. Making money is fun. I wish I was as savy and smart as some of you. I've thought of ways to make my own money without working for someone else but never came up with the idea that was worth taking the plunge.
