Looking pretty good again this year on my plum trees, although I am noticing not every tree produces every year. Is that a pattern to be expected? best free photo hosting

Two years ago I found an amazing thicket out in the country. I've been watching it for the past two growing seasons, and not a single plum produced since. Plum pisses me off. For as many as I've planted over the years, never gotten a single fruit.

Thanks for the pic. I've been looking at a few of mine that I expected to fruit this year and I haven't seen any. I think there were a few earlier in the season but I think bugs got to them. I need to do some serious pruning this winter I think.

I planted over 200 americans 10 years ago. Amazing the growth rate differences between trees. They are now starting to put the fruit down.

This has got me considering throwing $80 at this once more. This time, a fist full of plum plugs from NCR (if they're still around) next year. That would bring my "I'm not planting trees next year" tree planting list to:
50 plum 50 ROD 4 Weeping willow 10 B118 rootstock

I had a very good producing thicket like 6-8 trees (producing like bwoods picture) that I cleared all the trees around it to give it more light and better air flow. Production went to almost zero. It seems that wild plums are not like apples as far as managing them. Is this correct, or did something else happen?
My plumbs are still green but I will be watching now

Plums are an under story shrub/tree, they like a bit of shade...especially from the afternoon sun

I have been lucky with the Plum. First off, planted a bunch, several hundred. Second, the deer do not winter in that area, they move to the south (tamarack swamp). So the browse was minimal. I have plum on another farm, and the deer hit it hard (unless tubed).

My plums are producing. Mine were part of a CRP planting so I have not tracked individual trees. I have a few hundred ao I always have plums. Deer browse them heavily and on my place prefer the browse over crab apple. I have trees that have grown poorly (odd shaped )that I plan to cut them off so they shrub.

I have some odd trees as well, very short, kinda worthless. Right now I am seeing massive suckering on the one farm. Literally hundreds of new plum shrubs are popping up. Sometimes I mow in between the rows, but they keep coming up, gonna be real thick in there.

For as many as I've planted over the years, never gotten a single fruit. I had no luck with them in our river bottoms. Every time I see a loaded plum tree pic I want to try them again but on our new place. I’ve already got 30 crabs on order for next year. But 10 plums might have to happen too.
