Looks like pell lime is on sale at my local Menard's. Don't know if the sale is "universal" or not, but if you need some it may be about as cheap as you're gonna get it. Looks like with the additional 11% off (in store credit check), it'll be less than $2.70/40 lbs. (before tax obviously)

I got people lime last week at Tractor Supply for $3 but, they add it to their rewards program. I'm not sure what that gets me yet. I've got 200 more pounds to spread this weekend.

I haven't soil tested here but I'm sure adding a bunch of lime to my orchards sure won't hurt anything. I think I'll pick up 10-15 bags and put it down this fall. One thing I read in Michael Phillip's book on organic orchards was that applying lime after leaf drop helps control scab.

With as wet as it has been this year I'd say that would be a good idea. Lots of trees here have had scab this year. A coworker of my wife's has it on their trees this year. I'll make that suggestion. I told her to make sure they raked up leaves and fruit.

Definitely going to need to lime the plot expansions we are doing. Thanks for the heads up Stu!

I might even go fill the truck on this deal. By any chance did it have an analysis on the back? The pell at TSC is dolomitic and I'm looking for calcitic.

I believe I am going to buy a truckload of ag-lime in spring. I can see a JUGE difference between plots that have been limed and those that have not been limed. I think 23 tons will cost me about $700 and will be more than enough for my needs. (that price converts to about $1.15 / bag.....and will last 4x as long as pell lime - thus the price is more like 25 cents per bag - in terms of pell lime costs.)
BUT......I plan to lime my fruit trees, the oak trees, and new plots ......as well as replace the lime needed on established plots. The last time I limed was about 5 years ago......and I think it's just about time to hit it again. Stuff really grows when you get the PH corrected. Best money you can spend - IMO.
I have a drop spreader for my plots......but I wish I could spread via a cone spreader for the trees I would like to lime. Shovel method is way over-rated.

I just can't see buying by the bag unless you can't get it bulk. Last I bought was $10 a ton delivered.
