This tree is in the core bedding jungle area. I'll mark it on my land thread when I'm back on a PC. There is deer sign everywhere. I killed my biggest buck within 100 yards of this tree.
It is tall and spindly. Most branches are out of reach. I'll cut down anything competing after season.
Tree spikes will be placed as well.

Get it more light and it will respond well you might want to try grafting and graft on a few late hanging varieties to those upper limbs. Then you'll have them coming in to it in November as well. If the graft doesn't take it'll produce another limb so you're not losing anything by trying.

I'll need to first learn grafting. I watch a little of what you guys do but really don't know where to start with the graft type etc. Dads place has persimmons that I could learn on.
I'd need to pack a ladder many hundreds of yards to get to the branches. It about killed us carrying the ladder stand in. The trees are so stunted, hang ons can't be used. Ladder stands only.

I found 3 crabs within 40-50 yards of each other last fall when scouting/watching squirrels eat them from stand. Two small crabs are ten yards apart and the other bigger crab is about 40 yards away. I cleared around them about mid summer and they really exploded with some new growth. I plan to prune just a bit this winter and let them roll. All three are on a high spot right next to a swamp. There is also a big plum thicket next to the bigger crab. Small crabs 12-15 footers Big crab 25 footer only had about two dozen crabs this year. That looks like a great spot for next year. How late do they hang?

Do you have an aluminum extension ladder you could drag in there? I'm sure you'll do fine grafting. Just practice the cuts before you do it for real cut some smaller branches on a maple and try tge cuts and matching up the cambium layers. The wrapping is important but, you'll be able to do that. I pretty much do only cleft grafts and they work fine for me. Whip and tongue are harder for me to line up. If you do them this spring you could have new apple varieties in 2-3 years.

I forgot to take a pic of the tree. Sorry. This crabapple tree has a decent crop every year. The fruit drops from Oct. 1 thru Oct. 15. The texture is kinda mealy & the flavor kinda sucks. I've never seen a deer check it or eat these crabs. Should I try and top work it? How would I do that?

If it's a lone tree you could graft multiple varieties on it to form a "frankentree" so the tree would have an extended drop time. You would cut off limbs and graft a variety to each limb. Or you could cut the tree trunk down and graft it over to one variety. There's a lot of good grafting videos posted in the Apple Grafting sticky. We will help you if you need help. Just ask questions. deerhabitat.freeforums.net/thread/59/apple-grafting-info?page=1
