This appears to be a follow up to the link Stu had from Hansen on Jim's forum.
I am struggling to comprehend this... is the Elk River Crab not Malus ionensis, but different than the Nevis crab?
Elk River is a tetraploid for whatever that means???

I see they mention an apple named Goldo which was Grimes Golden top grafted to Duchess of Orenburg rootstock. Wouldn't the apple remain Grimes Golden?

Same with Tolmo. They say it's a Tolman Sweet grafted to a duchess of Odenburg.
I'm not understanding how grafting to Oldenburg rootstock converts it into a diiferent apple variety?

That confuses me.
I'm going to move this thread to "Interesting Fruit tree info"...if I can figure out how anyway
Well...looks like I can move to a forum, but not a thread within a forum. It stays where it is

Interesting.. I have chestnut crab on two different rootstocks, neither of which is identified. The one variety has chestnuts with more of a dark red skin.

I'm an apple dummy and don't pretend to know anything about them but after reading that what came to mind was this question. Was today's common root stocks chosen in part because they don't affect or maybe minimally affect the apple characteristic of the scions grown on them.
I guess this is the line that got me thinking that
