That's a good sign then. If they're bad tasting then it probably wasn't a grafted tree. That has a lot of the characteristics of the golden russet.

For anyone near commercial apple orchards, I'd encourage you to stop in as many of them as you can and just look around. Many orchards will have free tastings of apples and cider, and you can familiarize yourself with how lots of varieties look. Keep in mind that the fruit you'll see at those orchards are usually "prime" examples.
I've tasted a number of varieties at some orchards that made the decision easier to plant or graft those varieties (or not).

I'll be interested in what you think of the fruit in a few years. From the sounds of it, it should be a great cider apple.

I tried my Hudson’s Golden Gem for the first time today. Very tasty. Nice sweetness and slight pear flavor.

I have Ashmeads Kernel, The 120 year old russet variety at my farm, & Roxbury Russet.
