I have a real affinity for Golden Russet apples. I've added an Ashmead's Kernel and Egremont Russet to see if they are also tasty russets.
Anybody got russets growing?

We have two older 200 plus year old trees that are still alive. The bear bear up the best one last year. I think they may be the Roxbury Russets. The self seeded offspring of one of those is loaded this year. This tree was knocked horizontal when a 200 year old maple fell on top of it. We cut the wood up and winched it back upright as far as we could.

I believe Hudsons golden gem is a russet. My oldest has about 2 dozen fruit on it still. Waiting patiently til October to try one.

My HGG tree suffered some winter damage the first two winters it was in the ground ('13, '14) but appears to be recovering. I've heard it's a difficult tree to grow, it's good to hear yours is producing fruit.

Just a tiny split trunk year old graft. It's probably the biggest tree I've got now and I cut one trunk after the 2nd or 3rd year. I planted a M7 tree from Cummins a few years ago and it's just about dead. Not sure what happened. Maybe gly drift? Winter kill? No idea. I'm excited to try one in a month or so if the critters leave it alone. I've ate my first honeycrisps the last two weekends and they keep getting better. Will try another one this weekend.

Kabic,
Stu is spot on. Most russeting is brown but, it's the texture. I've seen green russeting before.
How did the apple taste? I watched the heirloom orchard guy last week carefully cut and taste each of tge apples I brought him from my land. If they don't taste good it's most likely a seedling grown non grafted variety.

It tasted decent\good. I'm not sure I know the proper terminology to describe it. It wasn't really too tart, seemed firm. I would eat one again and my two youngest didn't complain when they ate one.
