The nut looks Hickory. The bark makes me think Pignut.

I think hickories are too hard for a deer to eat. We have a lot of them and I have never seen a deer eat one. They are squirrel and turkey food.
Someone on the snowflake forum did claim that deer eat them. I think they are wrong.
