MADISON,Wis. (WEAU) -- Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has confirmed a single cougar sighting on two trail cameras in Clark and Marathon counties.
The last time the DNR had confirmed a cougar sighting in Wisconsin was in 2015. The Clark County video was captured in early August south of Neillsville, while the Marathon County photo was captured east of Marathon City in early September. The DNR says biologists have been unable to verify a location or origin of a third photo of a cougar reportedly taken in Waupaca County in early September.
The DNR says they have no evidence that cougars are breeding in Wisconsin.
Cougars are a protected species in Wisconsin and hunting is not allowed. In a press release, the DNR stated they do not consider cougars a threat to public safety.
