Well.....I lost the front wheel drive on my tractor. Took it to the dealer.....and got the news today. The shaft and couplings to drive the front axel are stripped away.....and it's gonna take $2000 in labor (20 hours) and $1000 in parts to do the repairs. Also need some new boots on the front axel. All said and done, I will end up spending about $3200 to do the needed repairs. OUCH!
I suppose I could try to find an independent guy and save a few bucks.....but I gave 'em the go ahead today. "If you wanna play....you gotta pay sometimes".
I think the JD front drives are a weak link. Maybe true for lot of other brands too. One of those times when you think a guy could "trade-up" more often and get full warranty and not have these issues. My tractor is a 2006 model.....and it's only got 550 hours on it. (3320 JD)
I really like the tractor....but those costs are a bit stout.

Would you need front wheel assist in your sand? Is it because the tractor is light weight?

Would you need front wheel assist in your sand? Is it because the tractor is light weight? Good point. With the lightweight compact tractors came front wheel assist. Pretty much standard on any compact tractor these days. I hear what your saying about rear wheel drive. Likely many times I could get by with 2WD....and typically I operate that way until I need 4WD. The other day.....I went to pick up my disk with my front loader. Picked it up and the rear wheels just spun.....as I had no weight on the back except for the fluid in the rear wheels. Why? .....cause I had recnently broken my drag links from operating the stump grinder. GRRR. Anyway.....while I could "get by" with 2 wheel drive and a bigger tractor (more weight/ more size) I like the compact tractors of todays vintage. Yep....they cost when you break 'em. Schmidt happens.
