Stu makes a very good point on pears and fire blight. Be sure to get FB resistant varieties unless you're ready fro deal with it. I've read several horror stories of FB and pears. They are more apt to get it than apples.

Not a great pic but this is a summer crisp pear. It has finally taken off in year four. It's first two winters were brutal. First winter was coldest on record and tree almost died but I think it is in the clear now. I also have FB around and it has not effected this tree. It is 9' tall but really took off this year. I also have a zone 5 ayers pear growing good but I can't explain that one.

Winter and fireblight wiped my Summercrisp out. Maybe I should try another one
