I tried my first homegrown Liberty's this weekend. The flesh was a little soft but the flavor was awesome! Sweet and tangy. I'll get a pic of one of the Apples next weekend.

3rd leaf Liberty. I haven't let it bear any fruit, I prune every March, fertilize every April, spray gly around the base every June. I planted 5 and 4 of them look like this.

Coop,
On the lower one try pruning those top branches back so there's only one leader or you may be able to pull a couple down horizontal so they don't complete with the leader. Maybe try tying the "main leader" more upright to get it to kickstart. Also, I couldn't tell from the photos. Do you have protection around your tree bases so the voles and critters don't girdle them?

I'd stop spraying glyphosate around the bases.

I'd stop spraying glyphosate around the bases. I always trim any suckers and low branchs. Then use a stove pipe. You still think it's a bad idea?

I typically trim to a central leader but this little guy has seemed to be just barely hanging on. It hasn't really grown from the moment it went in the ground.

You could take a 10' of emt conduit and drive it in closer to the base. Lift the strongest branch upright and tie it to the pipe. Then cut the leader off just above that branch. That may spur it on to better growth. There's one I see on the right that's taking the upright path. As far as gly damage I'd listen to Stu.

Liberty was recommended to me as a tree to plant in Western MN, so far so good. I think we have 4 planted all survived at least 2 or 3 years. No fruit yet, but soon I hope.
