Has anybody else had clover plot use go way up in the last week or two? I've got beds all over, scrapes along the woods edge, and areas where bucks have been pushing each other around in my largest clover plot. I usually notice increased clover plot use during late September until the clover goes dormant, but this year my clover seems to be getting more use than normal.

My clover has been being hit hard all summer but I think that is because of all the rain I had. It never had a midsummer stunt period and now looks like it could be on the cover of a high priced bob seed mix at Cabelas. The mixed in chicory did fantastic too. The doe my son shot Saturday had some of the thickest fat on a doe I have ever seen. Hopefully that was from the added plots I have put in and not an indicator of what's instore for this winter.

Lotsa rain and mild temps. Could be just good growth and better desireability?

How was your acorn crop? The deer here are still hammering acorns. Not touching the apples or plots much at all. Once the leaves drop they'll hit almost anything green.

Acorn crop was better this year than last, but not as good as a couple years ago. All of the wild crabs I've checked on have been cleaned up (probably other critters besides deer too). I have about 80 acres of standing corn across the road(s) so I imagine that's concentrating deer on my cover, but that's happened other years too. Maybe there's just more deer around this year The ahole Whitetail Property realtor that is trying to sell a chunk just west of me says this is a "high deer density area"....pisses me off

Once acorns wrap up, I think the wheel of forage spins quickly. I bet you could observe a hard shift to clover and radish, then to rye and turnips, then to browse and snow.
I fully expect my clover at the HH to be scalped to the dirt by the time I get there this week.

They've been cutting corn here the past two weeks. That'll change things.

I'll be surprised if any of the corn around here is cut before November. Just too wet

VERY wet. Offutts were picking potatoes last weekend, and I watched one of the trucks full of taters coming off a field and just bury up to the axles in mud in the field. They had a JD 4wd out there with 3 tires on all corners and all he did was went back and forth pulling out trucks and tractors.

While my clover plots are seeing great use, they are still as lush as can be. I probably have too much clover to be honest.

Never too much clover for me. My honey bees love the clover and the majority of my customers like my clover honey the best.

Stu,
Do you plant any winter rye? I'm hoping my WR holds out they December this year. I've got a strip in every plot area.

Stu, Do you plant any winter rye? I'm hoping my WR holds out they December this year. I've got a strip in every plot area. This will be the first year I haven't planted any WR. Most years I have deer using clover until at least mid-December, sometimes longer depending on temps and snowfall. When I (and the deer) will miss the WR will be next spring. I imagine I'll have a bit of self seeded rye on one plot, but that is probably only 1/3 acre or so.
