I only use them to stop a deer in a long narrow shooting lane. I try to get the deer to stop for a second or two so I can have a look at them. Otherwise it seems they can just walk through the shooting lane without stopping. The decoy gives them a reason to stop and look

I've read that if deer get to close to a decoy before spotting it they often times will spook. Thus an open setting is said to work better. Want to hear everyone's thought on that. I agree with using them in the open. I think their use should be limited to pre-rut and early rut. They're kind of a pain in the ass to haul out & set up. I agree they are noisier than shit to haul in the woods. I only use them in open areas where I can carry them decently (quietly) and I usually use them to try and draw deer to an area where I have better wind or something to my advantage. I have sprayed them with foam to quiet them but takes forever and ever for that smell to go away. I have always wanted to use a small buck and bedded doe combo but always too cheap to buy another decoy.
I have only pulled in one nice buck here in MN with a decoy most just look at it and continue on their way. I think a lot depends on the time of year, mood of individual deer and your buck to doe ratio.
I have not had good luck with tricking the alpha doe with decoys. Those alpha does hate all decoys in my opinion. I try to use them in openings where bucks are passing through and not as many does... to try and limit the interactions between does and decoys.

We used decoys in western open terrain states very effectively. We would shoot over the back of the decoys at the love sick bucks. You think I am crazy but it does work.

We've had success with carry lite, flambeau boss buck, and primos scarface. The scarface is much quieter to set up.
The reinhart doloma looks interesting since it has movement built into it. Bucks sometimes hang up out of range likely due to a lack of movement so this guy may get them to commit.

I shot a nice 9 that trotted across picked corn to my doe decoy. Probably the second most enjoyable hunt in my life. Overall, I would say decoys have been 50/50 for me, scaring some deer as well. I will try it again this year though.
