Do you use them? Buck Doe? Share your general thoughts and experiences.
When I hunted big Ag country I had good luck with a small buck at 20 yards either facing towards me or quarting to depending on the wind. I never tried a doe and I've never tried one in big woods in the plot.
Been thinking about it and I would have to use it over a plot so the bucks see it from a distance.

Love buck decoys. Hate doe decoys.
I use them near funnels pre-rut through end of rut. Never used one on an ag field or in big woods. Most of my biggest deer have been shot in front of a decoy...

Tried using one a few times on my old place (both as buck and doe)...all it did was spook every doe that saw it. I imagine at least part of that was due to user error on my part

I've read that if deer get to close to a decoy before spotting it they often times will spook. Thus an open setting is said to work better. Want to hear everyone's thought on that.

The does are already getting harassed and don't need more problems from deer they don't know. Did you ever have bucks see your decoy?

I agree with using them in the open. I think their use should be limited to pre-rut and early rut. They're kind of a pain in the ass to haul out & set up.

I truly think deer know (in a brushy setting) what deer are there before they can see them. A deer that they didn't hear or smell before getting close would be unusual and probably spooks them. I've had very few deer spook from my buck decoy but damn near every deer that saw my doe hated it. They would blow and stomp for 5 minutes then stiff leg out of there. My decoy setups are always in areas that you can see at least a hundred yards or so. One of my favorite hunts was a buck that left two does 60yds away to fight my decoy. The does saw it and hung up... he bristled up and came to kick ass... and left them standing there! Without that decoy they would have calmly walked 40-60yds out and never given me a shot.

I love using decoy. I have used it as a doe a lot. A few does did blow but a lot of does just come check it out and then go back to eating in food plot. I have several bucks try mounting the doe decoy. The last buck I shot was following a doe as they came into plot. He abandoned the doe and came right to the decoy. Fatal mistake for him. I have had mixed results using the decoy as a buck. I leave my decoy out year round just lay it down behind the stand. I also only use it on food plot so the deer are not surprised by the decoy.

That's what I've done too. Open areas. And that is what I would do in big woods. Some place a buck would visually have to look into a plot to see what is in there.

Buck only for me, in open terrain, and facing me. They are a blast. We have a couple of them and stash them at stands we decoy out of. I used to use tarsal gland scent on the ground around them but haven't used scent for a few years and the bucks commit just as well.
Last fall I had a buck fixing to attack it and had to spook him off only to have it attacked by another buck just before quitting time while attention was on a buck I wanted to shoot.

Any brands you guys recommend? I don't want to spend a ton on something I will only use a few times a year if possible.

^^^ I use a 2d decoy. Cheap and very easy to carry and set up, but kind of sucks in the wind. It replaced a 3d plastic decoy that was a pain to carry and loud to set up. I'm much happier with the 2d. It might be the ticket to see if you like decoy hunting but not wanting to spend the $$$ on an experiment.
