My father thinks his acre pond has become a home or is at least being visited by river otters..... for a long time they were protected here. He feeds some channel cats in the pond and one of them appears to have escaped their grasp at least once. Anybody have any dealing with otters? He claims there appears to be a family of 4 or 5 with a pair of adults and a couple smaller ones. I told him I thought they where bad news for his pond....but I am not sure he understands the urgency......

Tell him not to worry feeding any more fish. (ðŸ˜) With that many otters, they will empty that 1 acre pond in very short prder. Those SOB's kill for sport after they get a belly full.
URGENT is the correct word if je wants any fish in there

Otters are fish killers. They can out swim even fast fish so your dad's catfish will eventually get cleaned up if they're not stopped.

Well I have informed Dad that those bastards need to go if he wants any fish left. We will see what he does. It's his place so I can't force the issue and he isn't much of a "take the bull by the horns" type of person. The county he is in they can trap them legally, but I wouldn't be above shooting them if given the chance to protect the pond, but I doubt he goes that far. I'll just have to listen to him bitch later..... I love my father to death...but decision making and a sense of urgency just isn't his thing. I will see him Saturday so it will be interesting to see if he has moved off center on this or not.....I sure hope so.

Otters move on once a food source is depleted. They may leave enough behind that his pond will rejuvenate in a couple of years. Or he can restock it....in the mean time embrace the bitching. Jk ☺!

Well I talked to Dad Saturday and he claims they are gone and he hasn't seen them since. He isn't the type to have handled it himself either so I they are gone they felt on their own. I haven't been out to the pond to verify if they have done any real damage or not. Won't really be able to tell until spring as the pond is turning and the cold has pushed the fish deeper as it is. I hope the otter went to the neighbors lake. The neighbor is a top shelf ass-hole and his 5 acres or more of water would certainly support an otter family! He has been nothing but a pain in the ass and he has had plenty of issues with his lake as it is. Had a manure spill that a thunderstorm washed into his lake and did a number on it and then his spillway and damn failed a few years after that as well. This guy also planted under power lines and the utility company came in with the huge mulching machines and went to town as well. We all actually pulled up lawn chairs and beers and watched and laughed! We told him he couldn't do it, but he knew better than we did.....like I said....just a top notch ass-hole! He thinks because he has money and works for the ATF (desk job) that he is somebody important..... He had beavers once as well and they chewed the shit out of his place before he got a handle on that as well. Karma's a BITCH!
