Not many MN hunters I know have been around enough deer to know when diff calls might work. Its a shame - and congrats on MAKING your biggest buck happen! You can call deer? News to me.

The hunters of MN have been cheated. Calling deer can be very productive and a lot of fun. It really works like on TV.

It's crazy how well that works if the stars line up with the right deer at the right time. It's the second time in my 5 years at our place that I've had that happen with the best deer I had a picture of. First one circled downwind and busted me. Yesterday's deer was just mad and sprinted right in without worrying about the wind.

I honestly have never once had a buck respond positively to a grunt and come to check it out. All I have ever seen is deer go on alert and carry on about business. My sample size is pretty small though.
Rattling, nada. Not a single response.
Calling has done nothing for me. Can calls, grunts, wheezes, etc.

Great buck and story, Ben. Keep up the good work with the kids.
I have practiced some calling by mouth and have had some luck on young deer. A grunt is quite easy, but you do not have the volume of a call. I have tried the snort wheeze, but had no luck.
I have rattled in a few Minnesota bucks, but seldom try any more. I think the grand total is 4. I have had a few deer run away from the rattle without seeing them.
Thick cover (and sometimes during firearms season) a mouth grunt might get a deer to change it's movement so you can get a peak at him.
