Today when I was hunting with my wife I heard over 100 rifle shots. The gun season doesn't start until next Saturday. Only a couple of the shots were guys sighting in rifles for season, most were single shots or 2 quick shots. The rest had to be people filling deer tags. These shots came from all directions. A lot of them were the last 1/2 hour before dark. The state legislators could not keep their hands off a system that worked. It is turning a lot of people that wouldn't violate into big time violators because there is little chance of them being caught. With the no tagging regulation and just having to call it in, people are shooting their gun deer a week ahead of time. Just pisses me off. The only good thing was there no shots really close to me.

same thing happens in MN. I was bow hunting the 3 weeks before rifle season and I heard shots nearly every evening right before dark. Just 1 or 2 shots.

Same here. Year after year. Same deal. Highly doubt its varmint hunting.

I️ hear shots the few days before rifle season and feel it usually is targeting. Could guys arrive at Camp and just want one or two shots to verify zero before opener?

My hunting is at the other end of the spectrum. Our rifle season here in NH started Wednesday. I heard a few shots (4-5) besides my nephew. Yesterday was the first weekend day and I didn't hear a shot the whole day. No target shots either but, it was -10 wind chill.
The Wisconsin situation is sad if "hunters" feel they have to shoot a deer a week early. Do archery kills need to be checked in or are they called in as well.

All week before firearm I thought the same thing. How many guys are sighting in their guns the last half hour of light?

I am sure a few of those shot were guys verifying and sighting in guns, but I feel the majority were guys shooting deer early. I have bow hunted my land for 13 years and never heard this many shots the week before season. I will also add that it was freezing drizzle most of the afternoon, guys just don't go out sighting in guns in that kind of weather.

I'm thinking the C.O.s around here must have some info on "illegal activities". Slugger got his license checked the other day and I saw the warden's vehicle doing the slow creep two times yesterday morning. I'm glad to have them around, but to spend that much time in this small area is a bit unusual I'd think.

It all started when they got rid of the green paper.
They just don't get it. It isn't even just the poaching or whatever shady stuff goes on. Its the having to take your deer to the local bar and register it and have a few beers. Years ago closing weekend you would see whos backtag was "halfback" cause then everyone knew you shot a buck. Now its just shoot and process. Rinse and repeat. All the extra stuff that makes deer hunting special is being taken out.
When my son shot his first deer I still took him down the bar for a soda just to celebrate so he could tell people and puff out his chest. Kid was proud. That is all gone now.

A question for you Wisconsin guys...do most Wisconsin hunters enjoy the rifle season? It seems many, at least half, that I know "hate" the MN gun season. Is that the case, or I assume it is much more quality hunt, due to higher deer numbers, more appropriate timing, etc...
Just checking?

My friends that hunt MN and WI, grumble about MN hunting but do it because its an annual thing that they do. They enjoy hunting in WI, and the results are easy to see why.
Now granted, it depends on the area of WI they hunt too. Most people I know that hunt WI are in some pretty damn good areas and shoot the piss out of deer every year and are still overrun with deer every year.

It used to be week long camps, pull your kids out of school, companies shutting down, men missing thanksgiven dinner, shoot deer and drink a lot beer in the old days. Now it is hunting the first two days and go back to work Monday for many people. That are some bowhunters that hate gun season. But for the most part if you hunt, you likely hunt rifle season.
