Was thinking about this in the stand over the weekend as I watching doe groups pour into my turnip/radish plot. This is year 3 on this plot, and I've tried other plots 2 years prior so my 5th year of planting brassicas. The first 3 years the deer wouldn't touch the plots. Not even the leaves. Last year, they started to hit the greens, but didn't do much with the bulbs. This season they're pounding the tops and even nibbling on the bulbs. I was ready to give up 2 years ago, but glad I didn't. Guys would always tell me they need to learn what they are... give it a few years. They were right. I know most of you guys have been experimenting with brassicas for way longer than I have, but if anyone is starting out or hasn't seen good usage - stick with it. Deer love them. They hit this plot first on their way to destination alfalfa/corn. Kinda hard to see, but I'm in the tree on the left. Clover across the creek and brassicas on near side. And the dominant buck in the area. Hah. images upload

awesome pics, did you make your own blend or was it bob seed? I get all my seed from my bro who worked for Wilbur Ellis out of Grand Forks. Custom blend of a half dozen things, but the brassicas were what took hold. Will plant again for sure. Pulled the cam card after Sunday's hunt and they're out there all hours of the day every day. The creek separates two hinged bedding areas about a 1/2 acre each to the right in the trail cam pics. I hunt with anything from a straight north to straight west wind. I've had to stay 15 minutes after dark a few times to let the deer clear, but otherwise it's nearly bulletproof for being that close to feed.

From what I have heard, planting brassicas year after year is not good. Too hard on the soil, might work but lots of correct fertilizer will be needed.

I mixed radish ptt and rape in with my rye and clover and I had zero left last week at the Creek. Light overseeing on about 6 acres all eaten even with the dirt.

Would an all brassica blend get you farther into the winter? My main brassica plot can't be much more than 1/4 acre and feeds 10-12 deer and most of it will rot over winter. Im surrounded by ag though.

I think I am done bowhunting Minnesota deer herd. Never bought a tag this year.

I walked through one of my brassica plots tonight. It's a damn mine field! Thank gosh for the rye there holding the soil in place.
