My buddy is hunting north of Hayward with 11 other guys this weekend. They saw one 6 pointer for all 12 guys on sat. That is old deer hunting stomping grounds for me. Used to be really good hunting until the wolves and unlimited doe tags. Also where I help bear guide. Tell them to go farther north, closer to Iron River, lot more deer up there. I really think they don't care about finding a deer. Was more a get away from the ball and chain for a weekend and get drunk and stupid.

Been slow over by us. Our hunting party hasn't seen a buck. Neighbors seem to be out in force.

Quiet by us, very few shots. During our afternoon breaks we have been driving around, not many deer hanging. Makes you wonder if the baiting is driving deer nocturnal.

Does baiting drive deer nocturnal? How dos that work? 50 weeks a year no people in the woods and a couple weeks before season everyone shows up and dumps corn. Deer seemed to have disappeared even from food plots.

Having finally bowhunted some this year, I saw a reliable pattern go out the window on opening day rifle. I don't think we've got baiting too bad, just a ton of activity.

About 25 years ago I was bow hunting north of you in Itasca county. I saw a very nice buck working a rubline. The next day I had consistent and constant winds to move my stand in along this rubline. I was sitting there about two hours before dark and two rifle hunters came in and built a stand in anticipation of the rifle hunt. Chain saw, hammers, and the whole works. The guys were very close to me and never knew I was there. End of story. Pressure does it and you can’t control it on public land.

Our West Virginian guest got a doe just as I anticipated. I am pretty sure it was the same one we saw cross the far end of the field, way out of my daughters range.

Well my plan for rifle season has worked so far leaving my place a sanctuary. Late today I pulled the cards and I have daylight pictures of two does and two fawns who have survived the Amish Army. I also have a buck that is a night picture he was quite a ways off but I believe he is a 6. I just hope the deer figure out that they are safe on my 40 during rifle season.
