I've got 500 black and 500 norway spruce on order for next spring from NCR. Now I'm looking at adding a bunch of pines from Univ. of Idaho.
I guess I could spend it all at the tavern instead

Too many reruns of a Charlie Brown Christmas is my guess. Go see a hypnotist for help. And if they make you feel uncomfortable - expose them so they are fired.

Do you have openings you'll plant them in or are you going to drop some junk trees to make room?

I keep feeling that same way. After nearly 10 years.... Still waiting for my trees to do anything to add to the cover.
That Dbag from Prairie Land Management years ago used to spew his crap about manage by thirds. 1/3 food. 1/3 thermal cover. 1/3 something else.
He saw my posts on old Fishing MN forums and contacted me directly. Trying to sell me on his bullshit. Wonderful. We have 120 acres. You want me to plant 40 acres of food. Plant 40 acres of confifers. And do something else with the other 40 acres...
All available acres we have to cultivate are cultivated. All available acres to plant trees have been planted. The rest of the land is what it is.
What was his name.... Kyle?

White spruces in partial shade in sandy soil can stay at 4-6' seemingly forever. No way I can cultivate 1/3 of my place...and I wouldn't do it if it was possible.

Stu,
Time flies. When did you purchase your land and build?
All I can say is we purchased in 2009. I've seen things seem to take off the last few years. Trees that were 3-4' when we bought are now 15-20'. The pines and evergreens seem to be jumping in big spurt growth now. I'd think yours would begin to take off in the next year or two as their roots spread out.

I only put one apple tree in the ground that year due to it being too late. 2013 I planted a few hundred bareroot pines and spruces from MDC (the last bareroot conifers I hope to ever plant). I lost 95% of those to drought. 2014, '15, '16, and '17 I planted thousands (right around 3700 I think) of pine and spruce plugs from NCR. I'm guessing over 85% of those are alive and doing well. The tallest trees I've got now are some austrian pines, some are pushing 5'. I've also got some white and norway spruces around that 4-5' mark. In the next 5 years this place will change appearance significantly.

In the next 5 years this place will change appearance significantly. It certainly will Stu. When I bought my place in 2010, the majority of the white spruce plantation was knee high. Now I'd say the average height is 6-12 feet. I still have some thin areas, but most of those are access areas where I really don't want deer bedding anyway. Like you I lost thousands of trees I planted due to a couple of very dry summers. I kind of gave up on that aspect after that. Very disheartening.

Sounds like Satchmo and Stu will be seeing them really take off in the next 2-3 years. It should change things quite a bit for you.
