Spirit AeroSystems just announced a $1B expansion in Wichita that will create 1000 new jobs. Contract work will create a bunch more jobs associated with the expansion. Great news for the area, it's a huge job market increase! Things like this tend to help all the small towns locally that seem to be drying up. It's been a long time since we had a positive like this happen in the area, are you guys seeing local growth?

When they take the rail lines away from small towns, their fate is usually set in stone. Our little town of Mora loses 2 business's for every one business that starts. Commercial taxes are way to high for a business to get started here. And if they do get up and running, they soon find out they need to set prices for their goods high to make ends meet. So people just head down the road 20 miles and buy at walmart. I have watched town after town collapse around here into just a gas station and a bank or bar if they are lucky.

A gas station and a bar/liquor store describes what the majority of our small towns have turned into. Factory work dries up and disposable income for the population goes out the window.

Business is good and seems to be getting better.

In Sioux Falls, our growth is only limited by the people we have to build it. If we had machinery operators, truck drivers, and craftsmen, we'd be building even faster. Most people still don't realize that Sioux Falls is a cultural and economic paradise in the midwest (liberals not allowed). Imagine everything you like about a large city, without all the things you can't stand. That's Sioux Falls.
As far as small towns go, don't forget main street turning into a ghost town. You usually see a dying napa store, a bank, a telephone company office, a run down city maintenance shed, and about 20% of the store fronts are now antique stores because they have zero leasing value.

No taxes, you get no Liberals! They have nothing to feed off of!

No taxes and less liberal regulation. There are Minnesota companies that put their headquarters in SD for that reason...smart!

This is exactly why I'm a huge fan of less govt and trickle down economics. Economic opportunity with the expansion. Work hard and get you some!!!

The mobile population has made small town stores a hard proposition. I think people are willing to travel much farther than they used to go shopping. Better roads (when was the interstate system completed 70s?), better vehicles.
FYI the NAPA stores around here are doing well, I think they get a lot of business from the sand mines and farmers.

The Spirit expansion is the first good economic news I've seen since Brownback signed his plan into law. Obama's economy could have had something to do with it, but KS fell way behind in growth compared to other states during the same time frame. What happened in real life was that the tax breaks went into owner's pockets, and not re-invested into the workers. I think trickle down has to be forced or rewarded. ie - we will give you 10% tax break if you have 100 full time employee's, 20% tax break if you have 200 full time employee's, etc... Otherwise owners seem to keep the extra themselves. Case in point; I know a rancher who saved a grand or so in taxes through Brownback's plan. He said that wasn't enough to hire a guy so he put the extra money in the savings account so that he could cover expenses in case the cattle market dropped (the horrible economy snowballed because nobody wanted to spend money... because of the horrible economy.). I'm a huge fan of trickledown in theory, but think it has to be rewarded to work in down economy.

This is also why the economy is roaring now despite any actual positive fiscal or monetary policy outta Washington. People with cash feel better about their prospects, so the wallets are opening up. When our country was being ruled by an economic terrorist and our only line of defense was a bunch of pussies in the GOP, cash got stuffed into mayo jars and buried. Then a fighter walked in...
