I grew up fly fishing the Pine River area for many years. Some of my fondest memories. My brother and I were given new Fenwich flyrods as graduation presents. We would fish a lot of the lakes up toward Longville. We mainly used beetle bugs w/ Uncle Josh pork rind V's for sunfish and 1/64th oz white Doll flies for crappies. The fish we kept and cleaned back in those days was insane. I would stick with a 5 weight rod so that you can horse those bull 'gills out of the bullrushes during the spawn.

I grew up right in the middle of the Hack, Pine River, Longville triangle. My family had a resort for years there. Just west of Longpine Store by a few miles.

Good looking old setup sandbur! Looks like a decent fiberglass rod. One of these days I will have to post a photo of my old school, spring loaded, automatic fly reel setup, still one of my favs to go after trout on small spring creeks. It does have a somewhat more modern rod, but I cannot even count the number of trout I have landed with that rig. It used to be the only thing I ever used. Everyone in my family used them at one time, dad and mom, uncle's, cousin's, you name it, they all used them, it just so happens I acquired the nicest(re...oldest) one at a garage sale many moons ago. The seller did not know what they had.

We shot cedar arrows with it.

We shot cedar arrows with it. That's not a bad idea sandbur. I'd be fine with one all encompassing thread that included vintage hunting and fishing gear and old school hunting/fishing/camp/group photos? I will say this though, do yourself a favor sometime and try casting one of the new higher end graphite rods, you may be so impressed that you will fess up for one someday. From what one of the semi-retired owners of our company tells me, they make a great retirement gift to yourself.

I am making some changes in other commitments.

Just picked up a 6 wt flyrod and reel today at Cabelas. Been years since I chased the panfish with flyrod. I went with 6 wt over the 5 wt in the event I want to toss something a little bigger for bass.

Still looking at catalogs and dreaming. I need to get foggy back in the lake country and talking to some of the guys up there. Garage sales and such. I told my daughter I wanted to fly fish and she quickly said she wanted to go along.

Anybody use the clouser minnow in lakes that do not have trout. Suggestions? Size?

I use Them in the river. When I tie my own I use The pull chain on ceiling lights for eyeballs. Slower fall does better for me.

I gave one of the kids that works for me a small metal container of about 150 fly's and poppers from the 30's, 40's and 1950's. He is just getting into fly fishing, and I have not tried it in 40 years. Thought those old ones would give him something to start with as new fly's are $5-10. Some pretty cool ones in that box! He said they are working on his hybrid sunfish very well!
