My wife's grandparents (farm folks) always had a planter of mint on their porches and they claimed the natural smell of it kept the bugs away. They also claimed that hedge apples kept bugs and spiders away as well. They would always ask me to get some for them and they would place them in corners of the out-buildings and of the porch and even in the basement. Know idea if either really work...... They where also a big fan of martin, blue bird and swallow boxes.
