anyone have experience of dropping established aspens in areas with reed canary grass. I want the rooted suckers to grow where the grass currently is.
1. will the suckers simply grow with the grass there?
2. I spray oust xp over my spruce trees but it appears that won't work with the aspen. any idea what herbicide I can kill the grass and not the suckers?
Thanks,

Welcome efaust,
I have no experience on poplar/aspen in canary grass but, I know one of the keys to the roots regenerating is sunlight and warm soil temps. This is usually done by large clear cuts. It the main roots of the tree are already in the canary grass then they could root sprout and grow above the canary grass quickly. If they are not currently present in the grass then it could take time for the roots to spread there. Not sure on any spray other than to hit it hard before you cut but, remember that the roots are within 4" of the surface so if yiu spray and there's already suckers there you could damage the tree.

Welcome! I have seen some popple regeneration in reed canary grass. It does happen but not to the extent that it does in other environments.

Reed canary grass can grow in areas that are too wet for aspen, so if the area is too wet you probably won't get aspen sprouts there whether there's reed canary grass or not.
If the reed canary grass is in a dry area, I'd be shocked if aspen sprouts wouldn't grow through it. I agree that they might suppress the regrowth a bit, but you'll likely get some new growth through that area.
I'd cut a few aspens in the off season and see if you get the results you are looking for and then go from there. Good luck-

Mow, if possible, or weed whip then roundup... a weed mat (with aspen plug) tubed. That combo has worked--ok for me.

You can take a reed canary stand and establish an aspen colony? I don’t have pic. I’ve tried aspen, dogwood and black spruce. A few are alive. Trial run
