I’ve got two options for cutting this weekend. One is geared towards stump sprouting/general ground cover thickening. The other is clearing to release desireables already there.
Stuff I want to stump sprout is aspen, tag alder, swamp ash, maple, and basswood. Is it too far into spring already to cut and still get great stump sprouting?

Good news for you is that where you're headed you don't have to worry about being too far into spring...

If you get it done before springs breaks, you'll be just fine I would think. Still a lot of energy in those roots. There isn't much spring in Boy River yet.

Boy River cancelled sporing this year. Summer was shortened as well.

A client just told me Walker has two foot of snow on the ground and more on the way. Seems fitting with 8 more inches on the way to reflect on the fact that I planted plugs last year on April 8th.

SD,
With that much snow if you cut at snow level there will be plenty of stump left for sprouting. If it were me I'd concentrate on opening up trees you want to have more light. Then go after the others. I tape trees I want to open in the fall and then clear around them when I can. Sometimes I'll see tapes and they remind me of work I have to do. Be safe this weekend.
This time of year snow will melt quick if you get sunlight. We had close to 30" on the ground a couple weeks ago. It's raining today and may be gone by Saturday.

I guess I jumped the gun. My brother says we still have 10" in most places. I doubt it will be gone by Saturday. People have reported bear have woke up and are out looking for feeders.

People are feeding the bears? Lots of people here have bird feeders. The state highly suggests removing them by April 1 as that's when most bear emerge from their winter naps. Lots of people keep their bird feeders up year round and ignore the requests to pull them. Then the bear hit the feeders in a neighborhood and they still ignore the requests to pull their feeders. Eventually things happen and their are bear incedents where the bear are killed.

The less than bright homeowners would keep straightening out their shepherds hooks, hanging their feeders back up, and then call the authorities to complain. Duh.
