I have always used 6lb Berkley Trilene XL on my jigging rods but the last couple years it seems like the Berkley trilene gets a bad memory on it in less than a season and has to be changed out every year. What do the rest of you guys use?

Brand preference? What pound test? Hi-vis or low-vis?

Brand preference? What pound test? Hi-vis or low-vis? I think I got power pro last time. Not loyal to any really, but have used that for years. On my walleye rod I think I use 12-14lb. Prob 12. Mine is not low vis. I’ll tie a jig right to it. But I also use rigs a lot and at that point there is usually a mono leader on the end which is much thinner line.

What kind of rod/reel you buy? I bought a 6’10” St. Croix walleye series rod last year. Put a shimano reel on it. Medium size

6 pound smoke colored fireline for me. I would entertain something else if it's clear water though. I use the same for ice fishing, but with a 30" fluorocarbon leader.

If I go to braided line I plan to use a six foot flurocarbon leader.

Most of our jigging was done below dams in very rocky rivers and riprap shoreline areas of flowages and we always used Trilene XT, it is a bit stiffer and more abrasion resistant than XL. It was also a lot less prone to memory coiling.

We run 6lb fireline on all our walleye jig poles for fishing in Canada. Never an issue. Just put some mono backing on first.

6 lb xl has turned into a pain in the ass. Glad it’s not just me. But I prefer Mono.

If you use Berkley XL, make sure you check the code as to the manufacture date as a lot of retailers have old inventory that has been sitting around for a long time. Checked at our local Fleet farm yesterday and every thing they had on their shelves was 2 years old. On the code that I circled the letter corresponds to the month, A = January, B = February and so on. The next number is day. The next number is the year and the last number is manufacturing line it came off of. This particular line that I bought last year was made March 17, 2017 on mfg. line 2.

How long before mono tastes like skunk piss? (Or should be thrown away) Never tasted skunk piss. You are the expert with this stuff. Don’t keep us in skunk scents, I means suspense.
