I've always preferred Stren mono in either 6 or 8 pound test. 8 pound if I'm on the Mississippi River where there could be bonus big fish catches and 6 lb test most other locations.
I like braided lines for casting lures and mono for jigging.

I like braided lines for casting lures and mono for jigging. I've always like Stren mono also but have been trying other stuff the last couple of yrs. I'm having a hard time finding something better. Two things I don't like in a line: memory, and breaking at knots. A little stretch is ok if it casts well and doesn't break...

Flourocarbon which is like mono but invisible in water, if you are jigging in 20 feet or less. Deeper than that go braided with two feet of flouro leader. Mono and flouro have a lot of stretch. Braided will let you feel bites better and better hook sets in deeper water.

I use Power Pro braided with either mono or fluorocarbon on my ice jigging walleye rod. I use a tiny ball bearing swivel and about 18" to 30" of 6 or 8 lb Trilene XT. In clearer water, I use about 30 to 36 inches of 8lb Berkley Vanish Flourocarbon leader material below the swivel.
